Barefoot Ballet

Introducing the Pryce Centre's groundbreaking new program: Barefoot Ballet - Not just steps but Cultural leaps.

Embark on a journey of enchantment as we blend Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander storytelling with the grace of classical ballet in this innovative and Culturally immersive dance program. Designed for young minds aged 6 to 10, seeking to foster a profound Cultural connection to Country. Led by esteemed First Nations instructors and local Cultural educators, these sessions will unfold amidst the natural beauty of Cairns and Pryce Centre's home in Bulmba-ja.

Launching in Term One of 2024, our Saturday morning classes in Cairns, priced affordably at $15 per student, aim to expand to Thursday Island in the near future. Culminating in a mesmerizing collaborative dance creation and an enchanting end-of-term performance, Barefoot Ballet is exclusively open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, offering a unique avenue for Cultural learning, physical activity, and artistic expression.

Beyond the dance floor, Barefoot Ballet serves as a conduit to Cultural exploration. Participants will not only master basic ballet techniques but also nurture their imagination and deeply engage with local stories, guided by Community storytellers and knowledge keepers at the Pryce Centre. This initiative is a stepping stone for young First Nations dancers, creating meaningful employment opportunities within Indigenous Communities.

Rita Pryce shares, "Barefoot Ballet is more than just dance; it's an avenue for Cultural discovery and a platform to preserve and celebrate our heritage. We are paving pathways for young dancers and striving to enrich their lives through art, tradition, and knowledge."

With a vision to expand into regional and remote areas, including preschool-aged students, Barefoot Ballet aims to ignite early interest in dance and Indigenous stories. Pending funding, the program is set to launch in Term One of 2024, with further expansions anticipated based on funding and community demand.

We invite families to join this celebration of movement, culture, and community by enrolling their children in Barefoot Ballet. Witness the magic as young hearts dance, dream, and connect with the essence of our rich heritage.
